This page explains how the fundamental base damage for attacks is determined, which is crucial for understanding how most damage modifiers work in Outlands.

Base Damage Calculation

Most damage modifiers, including skill-based and weapon-based bonuses, are calculated using a value known as base damage.

The starting point for base damage comes from your weapon. To view the base damage range of a weapon, use the Arms Lore skill on the weapon. When performing an attack, the initial damage is determined by randomly rolling a value within this base damage range (e.g., a weapon with 10-15 base damage will roll a number between 10 and 15).

Damage Modifiers by Target

This initially rolled damage is then modified depending on the type of target being attacked:

  • Against players: The rolled base damage is used without modification.
  • Against tamed creatures: The rolled base damage is multiplied by 1.5.
  • Against non-tamed creatures (PvM): The rolled base damage is multiplied by 2.0.

The result of this calculation (Rolled Weapon Damage * Target Multiplier) serves as the base damage used in subsequent damage formulas, such as those involving Tactics, Anatomy, Lumberjacking, Slayer properties, spell damage bonuses, etc.
