The Stealing skill allows players to take items from other players or creatures. Players must join the Red Hand Thieves Guild to steal from innocent players and the Grey Hand Thieves Guild for PvM-related thefts.
Mechanics
Players can use the Stealing skill to take certain items from another player.
To steal from innocents, a player must join the Red Hand Thieves Guild.
Base success chance to steal an item is (1 * (Stealing Skill / 100))
.
A minimum of 80 Snooping skill is required to make any Stealing attempts.
Players cannot make Stealing or Snooping attempts for 2 minutes after death.
Stealing an item is considered "using" an item, which triggers the 500ms delay before another item can be used or moved.
Players will not be Perma-Flagged for stealing against a player who attacked them first.
Stolen items cannot be lifted by any player for 30 seconds.
Players who make a stealing attempt (success or fail) cannot use Eject or Help/Stuck from a house for 5 seconds.
Players can join the Grey Hand Thieves Guild to perform Mugging & Pilfering against creatures.
The Thieves Codex enhances the Stealing skill for PvM.
The following apply to stealing from creatures:
- A player may only steal a maximum of 1,000 gold per creature.
- A player can only successfully steal from a creature once.
- A creature will become barren after 3 players have successfully stolen from it.
- Stealing from a Paragon mob will always yield a Black Goods item.
Players do not need a free hand to perform a Stealing action.
Skill Cooldown for using the Stealing skill is 5 seconds (previously 10 seconds).
Improving Stealing Chance
A player who is wearing a Disguise Kit no longer gains a +25% bonus to stealing success chances.
A player making a stealing attempt against a Disarmed target has a +25% bonus to stealing success chances.
A player making a stealing attempt against a Hamstrung target has a +25% bonus to stealing success chances.
Stealing Weights
Item weight does not affect stealing success chances.
Maximum weight a player can steal per item is: (10 * (Stealing Skill / 100))
stones.
If an item is stacked (gold, reagents, etc.), the amount stolen is: ((5 * (Stealing Skill / 100)) / Individual Item Weight * (Random value between .9 and 1.1))
.
Example: At 100 Stealing skill, an average of 50 Reagents or 250 Gold can be stolen from a stack.
Stealing from Containers
The max total weight of items stolen from a stack is no longer reduced by 50%.
The max total weight of Arrows/Bolts stolen from a Quiver is scaled downward based on the quiver's weight reduction scalar.
The max total weight of Reagents and Spell Scrolls stolen from a Wizard's Satchel is scaled downward by the satchel's weight reduction scalar.
The max total weight of Gold stolen from a player is scaled by the thief’s gold weight reduction for Strong Box Customizations.
Being Noticed
When a player makes a criminal stealing attempt (against a blue target), they have a chance to be noticed by:
- Other players.
- Human NPCs.
If a thief is noticed outside of town, it will only generate a system message.
If a thief is noticed inside a town:
- NPCs will call guards, instantly killing the thief.
- Players may call guards within 30 seconds, but must be within 14 tiles.
Increased chance of being noticed if:
- Each non-friendly player within 8 tiles increases the notice chance by 10% (5% if not in Line of Sight).
- Each human NPC within 8 tiles increases the notice chance by 5% (2.5% if not in Line of Sight).
- The thief has raised any Suspicion in town (see below).
Suspicion
If a player is noticed after a stealing attempt, their Suspicion in that specific town increases.
Each time a player is noticed, their future stealing attempts in that town have a cumulative +10% increased chance to be noticed.
Suspicion remains for 12 hours unless the player avoids being killed by guards in that period.
Players can check their Suspicion levels for each town by typing: "I must consider my sins"
or [ConsiderSins
.
Locked Containers
Players can now use Lockpicking against Locked Containers in other players' backpacks.
Players can no longer drag/drop/stack items inside Locked Containers in their own backpack.
Training
Pickpocket Dip Method
Pickpocket dips train Stealing and Snooping simultaneously to 100.
Setup a macro to double-click the dip every 5 seconds.
If you have access to a Pickpocket Dip, this is the easiest method:
Skill | Activity |
---|---|
0-50 | Train from NPC |
50-80 | Use a Pickpocket Dip on Shelter Island |
80-100 | Use a Pickpocket Dip outside of Shelter Island
(See pinned messages in #thieves-pvm on the Outlands Discord) |
Pack Animal Method
Buy a Pack Llama or Pack Horse from a Stablemaster and train Stealing on it.
Skill | Activity |
---|---|
0-50 | Train from NPC |
50-100 | Steal from a pack animal or another player/character outside of Shelter Island. |
