Summary
The path of an Animal Tamer is long and often challenging, but mastering it allows players to control animals and monsters, making it a lucrative profession for those with patience. The skill enables taming and commanding various creatures, which can be used in both PvM and PvP.
- Complete list of Tameable Creatures and their stats.
- Complete list of Pet Abilities.
Skill Gain & Passive Taming Gains
- Players gain Animal Taming skill from taming creatures where the success chance is below 100%.
- Players cannot gain skill from taming a creature that has been released by themselves or another player.
- Taming skill gains do not occur when standing inside a house (though taming itself is still possible).
Passive Taming Gains
- Each time a player gains 0.1 skill from taming a creature, they bank 0.5 passive taming points (max of 5 points banked).
- Passive taming gains are consumed by killing monsters with tamed pets.
- The harder the monster, the greater the chance to trigger a skill gain.
- Players can assist their pets in combat; as long as the pets contribute damage, they are eligible for gains.
Direct Taming Gain Limits Per Creature
Each creature has a maximum pool of taming skill points available before skill gains stop:
Skill Level | Max Points Per Creature |
---|---|
0-50 | 5.0 |
50-70 | 1.0 |
70-90 | 0.5 |
90-119.9 | 0.2 |
Taming Creatures & Pet Bonding
- Taming a creature requires both Animal Taming and Animal Lore.
- Players must be within 3 tiles to begin taming and within 6 tiles to continue the process.
- Pets bond with their owner after reaching Level 1.
- Pack animals cannot be bonded.
- Bonded pets recall, hike, teleport, rope, or gate with their owner.
- When a bonded pet dies, it turns into a ghost.
- Pets can be resurrected by a player with 80 Veterinary, the Resurrection spell, or an NPC Healer.
- Pets that are left out in the world without receiving a command from their owner for 24 hours will become untamed, unbonded, and deleted.
Taming Success Chance
- Players always have a minimum 5% success chance to tame a creature if they meet the required taming skill.
- Using a Shepherd's Crook provides a bonus to Taming Success chance based on its Accuracy and Damage (Tactics as %).
- Example:
An Exceedingly Accurate (+20% Accuracy) Shepherd's Crook of Power (+20% Damage) increases taming success chance by +40%
(i.e., a base 50% chance becomes 70%).
- If a pet is taking damage, it cannot be tamed and will display the message: "It is too angry to tame."
- A common taming method is to command another pet to attack the wild creature, then use "All Stop" or "(petname) stop" before attempting to tame.
Abandoned and Released Pets
- Pets must be interacted with by their owner at least once every 24 hours to prevent abandonment.
- Players remaining in-game for long periods should either:
- Use the Stables to protect their pets.
- Return to refresh their pet’s abandonment timer.
- Released pets are now Hindered for 60 minutes instead of being Pacified.
- Recently released creatures display the "*released*" text above their head.
- Abandoned pets can be recovered from an Animal Wrangler in Prevalia or Corpse Creek stables.
Stables and Control Slots
- Players can speak with a Stablemaster to access their Stables.
- A mounted pet does not count toward Control Slots (See: Mounts).
- Stabled pets do not accrue fees after 60 days.
Stable Options
- Retrieve Lost Followers: Allows players to retrieve lost pets for a fee.
- Reset Follower Level Selections: Resets all Stat/Skill/Trait selections for a pet (usable anytime outside of combat).
- Reset Follower Name: Resets a pet’s name back to its default untamed name.
Pull Followers
- Players can use [pullfollowers] to retrieve any follower within 5 tiles (cooldown: 5 minutes).
- Cannot be used if recently engaged in PvP.
Tamed Abilities
Each pet has unique Follower Abilities, categorized as:
Category | Description |
---|---|
Innate | Always active for that creature. |
Passive | Has a chance to trigger on hit or damage taken. |
Cooldown | Activated once and requires cooldown before reuse. |
Abilities can be viewed using Animal Lore on the creature.
Tamed Classes
All tameable creatures fall into one of three classes:
Class | Description |
---|---|
Attack | Focuses on dealing damage. |
Utility | Specializes in poison, disease, or debuffs. |
Tank | Designed for survival and maintaining aggro. |
Players can view a pet’s class in the Animal Lore menu.
Taming Bestiary
- The Taming Bestiary allows tamers to unlock upgrades for different pet classes.
- It is crafted via Inscription and is Blessed.
