The Animal Taming skill allows players to tame, control, and command creatures throughout the world. It is a vital skill for those who wish to use pets in PvM and PvP, offering a wide range of strategic benefits. As tamers progress, they can bond with their pets, train them to gain levels, and unlock powerful Follower Abilities.
Higher Animal Taming skill increases success rates for taming creatures, enables the use of stronger pets, and grants access to Underdog Bonuses for weaker creatures. The Zoology Guild system further enhances pet combat potential by rewarding players who diversify their tamed creatures.
Tamed creatures can be used for combat, utility, or tanking, with various pet classes and abilities that allow for specialized roles. Mastering Animal Taming is a long but rewarding journey, making it one of the most powerful and versatile skills in the game.
- Complete list of Tameable Creatures and their stats.
- Complete list of Pet Abilities.
Skill Gain & Passive Taming Gains
- Players gain Animal Taming skill from taming creatures where the success chance is below 100%.
- Players cannot gain skill from taming a creature that has been released by themselves or another player.
- Taming skill gains do not occur when standing inside a house (though taming itself is still possible).
Passive Taming Gains
- Each time a player gains 0.1 skill from taming a creature, they bank 0.5 passive taming points (max of 5 points banked).
- Passive taming gains are consumed by killing monsters with tamed pets.
- The harder the monster, the greater the chance to trigger a skill gain.
- Players can assist their pets in combat; as long as the pets contribute damage, they are eligible for gains.
Direct Taming Gain Limits Per Creature
Each creature has a maximum pool of taming skill points available before skill gains stop:
Skill Level | Max Points Per Creature |
---|---|
0-50 | 5.0 |
50-70 | 1.0 |
70-90 | 0.5 |
90-119.9 | 0.2 |
Taming Creatures & Pet Bonding
- Taming a creature requires both Animal Taming and Animal Lore.
- Players must be within 3 tiles to begin taming and within 6 tiles to continue the process.
- Pets bond with their owner after reaching Level 1.
- Pack animals cannot be bonded.
- Bonded pets recall, hike, teleport, rope, or gate with their owner.
- When a bonded pet dies, it turns into a ghost.
- Pets can be resurrected by a player with 80 Veterinary, the Resurrection spell, or an NPC Healer.
- Pets that are left out in the world without receiving a command from their owner for 24 hours will become untamed, unbonded, and deleted.
Taming Success Chance
- Players always have a minimum 5% success chance to tame a creature if they meet the required taming skill.
- Using a Shepherd's Crook provides a bonus to Taming Success chance based on its Accuracy and Damage (Tactics as %).
- Additionally, equipping a Shepherd's Crook will automatically set it as the active one for the Focus Aggression mechanic, triggering a system message if it wasn't already the active one.
- Example:
An Exceedingly Accurate (+20% Accuracy) Shepherd's Crook of Power (+20% Damage) increases taming success chance by +40% Using this, a base chance of 50% will become 70%.
- If a pet is taking damage, it cannot be tamed and will display the message: "It is too angry to tame."
- A common taming method is to command another pet to attack the wild creature, then use "All Stop" or "(petname) stop" before attempting to tame.
- It is possible to have a number of pets with you GREATER than the number of control slots (eg. You have 5 control slots filled and you tame another creature) however once this occurs the only orders you will be able to give to them are to follow you, until you are at or under your max number of control slots again.
Abandoned and Released Pets
- Pets must be interacted with by their owner at least once every 24 hours to prevent abandonment.
- Players remaining in-game for long periods should either:
- Use the Stables to protect their pets.
- Return to refresh their pet’s abandonment timer.
- Released pets are now Hindered for 60 minutes instead of being Pacified.
- Recently released creatures display the "*released*" text above their head.
- Abandoned pets can be recovered from an Animal Wrangler in Prevalia or Corpse Creek stables.
Stables and Control Slots
- Players can speak with a Stablemaster to access their Stables.
- A mounted pet does not count toward Control Slots (See: Mounts).
- Stabled pets do not accrue fees after 60 days.
Stable Options
- Retrieve Lost Followers: Allows players to retrieve lost pets for a fee.
- Reset Follower Level Selections: Resets all Stat/Skill/Trait selections for a pet (usable anytime outside of combat).
- Reset Follower Name: Resets a pet’s name back to its default untamed name.
Pull Followers
- Players can use
[pullfollowers
to retrieve any follower within 5 tiles (cooldown: 5 minutes). - Cannot be used if recently engaged in PvP.
Tamed Stats and Skills
- Tamed Creatures will automatically receive scalar bonuses to Stats and Skills applied at each level
- Followers only use one form of combat, Melee or Spells, each follower's combat type is listed as either "Melee Damage" or "Spell Damage" in their Animal Lore page to indicate this
Stat | Increment Per Level | Up to a Maximum of |
---|---|---|
Hits | +10% | +100% |
Attack Speed | +2.5% | +25% |
Wrestling | +5.0% | +50% |
Armor | +2.5 | +25 |
Magic Resist | +5.0 | +50 |
Poisoning | +2.5% | +25% |
Tamed Abilities
All creatures have specific abilities linked to that creature type and each ability is split into three categories:
Category | Description |
---|---|
Innate | Always active for that creature. |
Passive | Has a chance to trigger on hit or damage taken. |
Cooldown | Activated once and requires cooldown before reuse. |
Abilities can be viewed using Animal Lore on the creature.
Tamed Classes
All tameable creatures fall into one of three classes:
Class | Description |
---|---|
Attack | Focuses on dealing damage. |
Utility | Specializes in poison, disease, or debuffs. |
Tank | Designed for survival and maintaining aggro. |
Players can view a pet’s class in the Animal Lore menu.
Taming Bestiary
- The Taming Bestiary is an item which lets tamers earn experience to unlock upgrades which apply to creatures of the various tamed classes.
- The Taming Bestiary is crafted by players using the Inscription skill and is Blessed
Underdog Bonus
- If a player uses Tamed Creatures where their Animal Taming and Animal Lore skills exceed the Minimum Taming Skill required for that creature, the Tamed Creature will receive a number of bonuses.
- The Underdog mechanic is designed to offset the disadvantage of using a "weaker than normal" creature.
- Players can view the Underdog Bonuses in the Details Page of the Animal Lore menu for the creature.
- Creatures will receive the following bonuses:
- Damage Bonus: (50% * (Player Taming Skill - Creature Min Taming) / 70), up to a maximum of 40%.
- Damage Resistance Bonus: (10% * (Player Taming Skill - Creature Min Taming) / 70), up to a maximum of 20%.
- No Healing Bonus: Creatures do not receive any healing increase from the Underdog mechanic.
- A player's Animal Taming skill is capped by their Animal Lore skill for the purposes of Underdog (players must have both skills leveled).
- Players can disable Underdog Bonuses for all of their Tamed Followers by unchecking the Enabled button, useful for testing purposes.
Zoology Guild
- The Zoology Guild is a network of Zoologist NPCs that collect data on the usage frequency of different Tamed Creature Types in Outlands.
- Players automatically receive Combat Bonuses for their Tamed Creatures based on this collected data.
- Higher bonuses are granted to creatures that are used less frequently by players.
- Players can unlock additional Stable Slots for their character by using a diverse set of Tamed Creatures (similar to the previous Taming Bestiary system).
Follower Creature Specifics
- Player pets can be freely pushed through for movement by all players.
- Player pets move at 80% speed when attacking a player target.
- Tamed pets will no longer use abilities within 1 second of performing a melee attack against a player (PvP only).
- If a player dies in a dungeon, their Pack Animals and creatures with the Mule trait will now drop their backpack’s contents into the player’s corpse instead of onto the ground.
- Tamed/Summoned follower changes in PvP:
- Spell Interactions (PvP):
- Spells cast by Followers against other players will ignore Magic Reflect on the target player (the spell is not reflected, and Magic Reflect is not removed).
- Spells cast by Followers against other players will no longer affect the target player's 1st-4th circle Interrupt Window for PvP.
- PvP Damage Scalar increased to 30% (previously 25%).
- Maximum Melee Hit Chance in PvP increased to 66% (previously 50%). Melee hit chance against creatures remains at 100%.
- Chance to Trigger Abilities in PvP increased from 10% to 40% of their normal PvM chance (previously reduced by 90%).
- Special Ability Activation Chance in PvP increased from 60% to 75% of their normal PvM chance (previously reduced by 40%).
- Ability Cooldowns in PvP are now increased by 50% (previously doubled).
- PvP Zone Restrictions: Followers face restrictions in certain PvP zones. They generally cannot be summoned within, and existing summoned followers may be unsummoned upon entry. Combat commands (Attack/Guard/Patrol) are also typically disabled, forcing followers into Follow mode. See PvP Events, Factions, Town Struggles, Corpse Creek Contest for details.
Follower PvP Damage Window
When a player is engaged in PvP with another player, a Follower PvP Damage Window mechanic applies, resetting every 3 seconds.
During each 3-second window, every Follower (Tamed or Summoned) belonging to a player is capped at inflicting a cumulative amount of Damage against another single player target. This limit is known as the Follower PvP Damage Cap.
Any cumulative damage inflicted by a Follower during a window that would exceed its Follower PvP Damage Cap for that target will be reduced to 0.
Calculating the Damage Cap
The Follower PvP Damage Cap is calculated using the following formula: Cap = (Creature's Control Slots * (1 + (Controller's Total Printed Follower Skills / 100)))
Follower Skills include the sum of the controller's printed (real) skill points in:
Example: A player has 100 Animal Taming, 100 Animal Lore, and 100 Veterinary (Total Follower Skills = 300). They are using a Bullvore (3 Control Slots) and a Black Widow (2 Control Slots).
- The Bullvore can inflict a maximum of (3 * (1 + (300 / 100))) = 12 Damage every 3 seconds against another player in PvP.
- The Black Widow can inflict a maximum of (2 * (1 + (300 / 100))) = 8 Damage every 3 seconds against another player in PvP.
Other Notes
- Tamed creatures that are teleported (via Recall, Gate, Moongate) will default to Follow Mode.
- Tamed and Summoned followers cannot have their damage reduced by more than 90%, unless specifically reduced to 1 damage by an ability or effect.
- Dispelling a Summoned Follower belonging to a Murderer or Criminal player will flag the caster as attackable (grey) by the owner.
- Stealthed Tamed Followers now leave Footprints behind less frequently than before.
