There are two types of membership in the Thieves Guild: Grey Hand and Red Hand. Players in the Thieves Guild must choose one membership type, which determines what types of targets they may steal from, as well as what mechanics affect their thief gameplay. Players can access the Thieves Guild Menu by approaching any Thief NPC (even while dead) and either using the shift-click "Thieves Guild" context menu option or by saying "Thief", "Thieves", "Guild", or "Market" near them. The Thief NPC on Shelter Island is located in the basement of the inn in the main square.
Basic Membership Rules
While there are two different types of membership in the Thieves Guild, the following rules apply to both Grey Hand and Red Hand. Players must have at least 80 Stealing skill or higher to join the Thieves Guild and must maintain this skill level to benefit from Thieves Guild mechanics such as the Thieves Codex. Additionally, the Thieves Codex requires at least 80 in one of the following skills: Snooping, Hiding, or Stealth. Players can only change their Thieves Guild membership, including leaving the guild, once every 24 hours. Membership changes cannot be made while the player is flagged in PvP. Lastly, players are able to use Detective Lenses to determine another player's membership type in the Thieves Guild.
Grey Hand Membership

Grey Hand membership costs 5,000 gold to join, though the fee is waived when switching from Red Hand to Grey Hand. Members of the Grey Hand can only steal from Wild (Uncontrolled) creatures and are allowed to use the Thieves Codex. This membership type caters to PvM-oriented thieves, restricting them from stealing from blue (innocent) players.
Red Hand Membership

Red Hand membership also costs 5,000 gold to join, with the fee waived when switching from Grey Hand to Red Hand. Members of the Red Hand can steal from both Wild (Uncontrolled) creatures and blue (innocent) players. They also gain access to the Thieves Codex and receive a bonus chance to upgrade Black Goods obtained from PvM stealing. However, Red Hand members can never report Murders and will always turn Grey (but not Criminal) to any player who attacks them, even if they initially appeared as Blue (Innocent).
Detailed Mechanics
Stealing Notoriety and Flagging
If a player attempts to steal from another player, they will flag as Grey/Attackable to the victim for the next 2 minutes (but not to anyone else by default). Stealing actions are not automatically considered criminal actions. However, if a stealing attempt against a blue (innocent) target is noticed by any player or an invulnerable NPC outside of a house, the action will be upgraded to a Criminal Action, triggering a guard kill if within town limits.
Stealing from another player will always initiate a Heat of Battle timer, preventing Recall, Gate, or Hiking. This lasts 2 minutes for Blue/Innocent targets and 30 seconds for Grey/Red/Orange targets. Unlike before, thieves do not have a permanent victim list tracked. Players who are not in the Thieves Guild are still allowed to steal from any Green (Ally), Orange (Enemy), Grey (Criminal), or Red (Murderer) targets.
Snooping
All rules that determine who thieves can steal from also apply to Snooping attempts. Players must be Red Hand members to Snoop a blue (innocent) player. Additionally, thieves no longer flag as Grey for Snooping a container or triggering a Trapped Pouch in another player's backpack.
Stealing Mechanics
Stealing now has a 1-second delay between Snooping actions. Players can now steal while wielding a one-handed weapon, mirroring Potion usage mechanics.
Stealing Skill Check (Against Players)
The success chance to steal an item from another player is calculated as follows:
- Base Success Chance: (1 * (Stealing Skill / 100))
- Bonus if Target is Disarmed: +25%
- Bonus if Target is Hamstrung: +25%
Locked Containers
Players can no longer drag, drop, or stack items into Locked Containers in their backpack. However, players can now use Lockpicking on Locked Containers inside other players' backpacks.
Stealing from Wild Creatures
Players in the Thieves Guild are able to steal from Wild (Uncontrolled) creatures using two methods: Pilfering and Mugging.
Pilfering
Pilfering is initiated by directly activating the Stealing skill and targeting a creature. To attempt a Pilfer, players must have at least 80 Stealing and must also pass a Snooping skill check, unless they have unlocked the Shadow Hands Upgrade in the Thieves Codex, which can bypass this requirement. Pilfer attempts can be made from Hiding, though the player will be revealed upon completion. When a Pilfering attempt is made, both a Stealing and Snooping skill check are performed simultaneously.
A successful Pilfer grants the player Gold and a chance to receive Black Goods. Unlike conventional loot, the gold stolen does not reduce the amount available on the creature’s corpse. Additionally, Pilfering allows players to obtain rare and special loot items that might normally appear as corpse drops, including Dungeon-specific items. However, Pilfering does not yield common loot such as Gems, Magical Items, Reagents, Bandages, Arrows, or Bolts. Players also have the opportunity to obtain Event-specific loot items, such as Winterlands Tickets or Holiday Snowglobes.
Success
If both the Stealing and Snooping skill checks succeed, the player will receive Gold and possibly a Black Goods item in their backpack. A successful attempt displays a gold dust visual effect and plays a success sound, which is only visible and audible to the player.
Failure
If the player fails either the Stealing or Snooping skill check and is not hidden, the targeted creature will retaliate by inflicting a random amount of raw damage, scaled based on the creature's difficulty. A failed attempt triggers a red burst visual effect and a failure sound, visible and audible only to the player.
Pilfer Stealing Skill Check Formula
- Base Success Chance: (75% * (Stealing Skill / 100))
- Bonus if Player is Hidden: +25%
- Penalty based on Creature Difficulty: (-2% * (SquareRoot of CreatureDifficulty)) (maximum penalty of -25%)
Pilfer Snooping Skill Check Formula
- Base Success Chance: (100% * (Snooping Skill / 100))
Mugging
Mugging is automatically triggered when a player lands a Stealth Backstab against a creature within 1 tile. To perform a Mugging attempt, players must have at least 80 Stealing, 80 Stealth, and 80 Hiding. Similar to Pilfering, a Snooping skill check is also required unless bypassed using the Shadow Hands Upgrade from the Thieves Codex. During Mugging, both a Stealing and Snooping skill check are performed simultaneously.
Success
A successful Mugging attempt grants the player Gold and possibly a Black Goods item. The stolen Gold does not reduce the amount on the creature’s corpse. The attempt is accompanied by a gold dust effect and success sound, visible and audible only to the player.
Failure
If either the Stealing or Snooping skill check fails, there is no penalty.
Mugging Stealing Skill Check Formula
- Base Success Chance: (100% * (Stealing Skill / 100))
- Penalty based on Creature Difficulty: (-2% * (SquareRoot of CreatureDifficulty)) (maximum penalty of -25%)
Mugging Snooping Skill Check Formula
- Base Success Chance: (100% * (Snooping Skill / 100))
Max Stealing Successes on Creatures
Each creature has a limited number of times it can be stolen from. Players are allowed a maximum of one stealing success per creature. Normal creatures can be stolen from three times total by all players combined, after which they will be marked as "Barren" and no longer yield loot. Boss-level creatures have a higher theft limit, varying by Boss-Type.
Successful Stealing
When a player makes a successful Pilfer or Mugging attempt, they typically receive Gold equal to 25% of the creature’s normal Gold Value. The maximum amount stolen is 2,500 Gold for Boss creatures and 1,000 Gold for non-Boss creatures. The amount stolen can be increased by various bonuses, including:
- Fortune Aspect Armor
- Mastery Chain Links
- Weekly Regional Bonuses
- Guild Favors
- Thieves Codex Upgrades
- Progressive Loot Bonus (Gold value increases the longer a spawn remains at its location)
Additionally, there is a 15% chance that a successful theft will yield a Black Goods item.
Black Market
The Black Market can be accessed through the Thieves Guild Menu. Here, players can exchange Black Goods for rewards.
Thief Hue Items
Players exchanging Black Goods may receive rare Thief-Hued items (Hue 1067), including:
- Cloth, Dyes, Lanterns, Shields, Spell Hue Deeds, Runebook Dyes, and more

Thief Antiquities
Players exchanging Black Goods have a chance to receive Thief Antiquities, which function similarly to existing Antiquities. These unique items can be Registered by players at an Antiquity Manifest.
Upon registering a Thief Antiquity, players contribute to their personal collection and gain recognition for their discoveries. Additionally, a new Achievement has been introduced under the Luxury category, rewarding players for registering these rare items.
Thieves Codex
The Thieves Codex is a craftable item that allows members of the Thieves Guild to improve their stealing mechanics against creatures.
Book of Grifts
Thieves can purchase a Book of Grifts from the Prevalia Market. This functions similarly to the Book of Grudges, but instead tracks successful Stealing and Snooping actions against non-friendly players.
