Magery

From Fiend's Outlands Wiki
Revision as of 04:15, 28 March 2025 by Fiend (talk | contribs)

Magery is arguably the most versatile skill in Outlands, offering offensive capabilities, defensive buffs, utility like travel and summoning, and even creation of basic necessities.

A player casting a spell from their spellbook.
  • Spells require Reagents to cast, which can be bought from NPC Mages, player vendors, or found as loot.
  • Spell scrolls (crafted via Inscription or found as loot) can be added to a Spellbook to learn the spell permanently.
    • Drag and drop a scroll onto your Spellbook.
    • Alternatively, single-click the Spellbook and select Add All Scrolls in Backpack.

  • Casting Time (Summons) - 6.00 Seconds
  • Min Required to Cast - 80 Magery
  • 100% Success to Cast - 100 Magery

Detailed Mechanics

  • Minimum Skill: The minimum Magery skill needed to attempt casting a spell is ` (Spell Circle * 10) `. E.g., Circle 1 requires 10 Magery, Circle 8 requires 80 Magery.
  • Spell Scrolls: Casting a spell directly from a scroll temporarily increases the player's Effective Magery by +20 for that cast only. This primarily affects the chance to successfully cast the spell, especially if below the normal requirement.
  • Casting Recovery (GCD): There is a Global Cooldown (GCD) or recovery time after casting any spell, typically around 0.2 seconds before another action can be initiated.
  • PvM Damage Bonus: Spell damage against creatures (non-tamed/non-player) is increased by +100% (effectively doubled) compared to base values.
  • Damage Scaling: Base spell damage scales directly with the caster's printed Magery skill: ` Damage * (Magery / 100.0) `. A player with 50 Magery deals 50% of the maximum potential damage.
  • Evaluating Intelligence Bonus: The Evaluating Intelligence skill provides a significant bonus to spell damage rolls. The formula varies slightly between PvM and PvP (see individual spell descriptions in Template:SpellCircles).

Specific Spell Notes

Visual representation of AoE damage scaling based on targets hit.
  • Dispel: Players can target themselves to dispel their own lowest-duration Blade Spirits or Energy Vortex summon anywhere in the world. Targeting another player's summon requires direct targeting and may flag the caster as criminal if the summon is blue. In PvP, Spirit Speak provides a chance for summons to resist Dispel attempts.
  • Magic Reflect: The 30-second cooldown begins when the reflection occurs, not when the spell is initially cast. Inscription provides a chance for the reflection to persist after reflecting a spell (higher chance in PvM). In PvP, it can reflect at most 2 spells. Chain Lightning & Meteor Swarm remove reflect but deal only 1 damage on that hit.
  • Mana Drain / Mana Vampire: Reduce the target's Magic Resist skill for 2 minutes (effect halved in PvP). Mana Vampire is stronger and overrides Mana Drain. Does not stack with itself. Can be nullified by drinking a Magic Resist potion.
  • Dispel Field: Can target the ground tile of a Field Spell (Wall of Stone, Energy Field, Poison Field, Fire Field, Paralyze Field) or a player/creature standing within it to dispel the field.
  • Mass Dispel: Dispels Summons (green, grey, red, orange flags) within a 4-tile radius. Targeting a blue summon directly will flag the caster Criminal. Also removes all Field Spells within the radius.
  • Meteor Swarm / Chain Lightning (PvP Changes):
    • No longer subject to the multi-caster fizzle mechanic.
    • Remove Magic Reflect (dealing 1 damage).
    • Caster incurs a 30-second cooldown for both spells after hitting any player with either.
    • Chain Lightning has a 0.25s damage delay; Meteor Swarm has a 0.5s delay.
    • Chain Lightning hits max 8 Players; Meteor Swarm hits max 10 Players.
    • Damage calculation in PvP is based on the number of players hit (see Template:SpellCircles).
  • Flamestrike (PvP Window): Hitting a player with Flamestrike starts a 1-second window. Subsequent Flamestrikes targeting the same player within that window have a cumulative 10% fizzle chance each.

  • When casting offensive spells against creatures, there is a base 10% chance for the spell to become Charged.
  • Charged spells deal +50% additional damage.
  • This chance can be increased through various means like Wizardry Grimoire upgrades or Aspect Gear. See Overcapping for how excess chance converts to damage.

Heat of Battle

  • Players actively engaged in combat (having recently dealt or taken damage) enter a "Heat of Battle" state.
  • While in Heat of Battle, casting Recall, Gate Travel, or using Moongates is prevented.

Poisoning Interaction

  • Creatures cannot inherently resist Poison spells cast by players (Magic Resist does not prevent application).
  • Players with Poisoning skill have a ` (20% * (Poisoning Skill / 100)) ` chance to upgrade the casted Poison spell effect on a creature to Lethal Poison.
    • Requires a Lethal Poison potion in the backpack.
    • Successful upgrade has a 20% chance to consume one Lethal Poison potion.
  • PvP Poison spell level cap depends on distance (Lethal: 0-4 tiles, Deadly: 0-8 tiles).

Wall of Stone / Energy Field Destruction

Attacking a Wall of Stone.
  • Players within 1 tile can double-click a Wall of Stone or Energy Field to attack it.
  • Attacking reveals the player and entangles them for 0.5 seconds.
  • Attacks occur automatically every 2 seconds while adjacent.
  • Damage per hit: 10-25 (unaffected by skills/gear).
  • Wall of Stone HP: 100
  • Energy Field HP: 200
  • Monsters adjacent to these fields may also attack them if "stuck". Monster damage scales with their potential threat.

Spell Interrupts (PvP)

Spell interruption mechanics are designed to manage spell spam in PvP.

  • Hostile spells from Circles 4 through 8 always have a 100% chance to interrupt another player's spell cast if they hit during the casting phase.
  • Hostile spells from Circles 1, 2, and 3 operate on a "window" system:
Circle Interrupt Mechanic

First Circle
    • The first hostile 1st circle spell hitting a casting player has a 100% interrupt chance.
    • This starts a 5-second window.
    • Any subsequent hostile 1st circle spells hitting the same player within this window have a 0% interrupt chance.
    • Each hit resets the 5-second window timer.

Second Circle
Same mechanic as 1st Circle, but tracked independently for 2nd circle spells.

Third Circle
Same mechanic as 1st Circle, but tracked independently for 3rd circle spells.
  • Casting spells on yourself will always interrupt your own concurrent spell cast, regardless of circle, and does not interact with the interrupt windows.

Indirect Fire (AoE Spells)

  • If a Player or Follower is hit by a Player-Casted Area of Effect (AoE) spell (e.g., Meteor Swarm, Chain Lightning, Earthquake) where the caster does not have direct Line-of-Sight (LOS) to them, it's considered Indirect Fire.
  • Damage taken from Indirect Fire is reduced by 50%.
  • This reduction does not apply on Ships.

Training Magery

  • New characters choosing 50 Magery, 49 Meditation, and 1 Evaluating Intelligence start with a 2250 charge Spellstone, excellent for early training.
  • Use a Wizard's Satchel (crafted via Inscription) to reduce reagent consumption.
  • Skill gain chances depend on the spell circle being cast relative to current skill level.
Magery Training Guide (Example)
Skill Range Activity
0 - 50 Train from an NPC Mage.
50 - 60 Cast Lightning (Circle 4) inside the New Player Dungeon.
60 - 75 Cast Invisibility (Circle 6) on yourself repeatedly.
75 - 80 Cast any Circle 7 spell (e.g., Flame Strike) inside the New Player Dungeon.
80 - 85 Cast Flame Strike (Circle 7) on creatures in the Prevalia Zoo.
